I know it costs anywhere from 4-6 grand to go to the academy but do they offer financial aid? Also besides the 4-6 grand do you still have to pay for classes and books like at a university. I want to go the the Police Training Institute in Urbana Champaign Illinois.

  1. It may cost if you didn’t get hired by a city, state, or county, but if you did then they pay the bill.

  2. You don’t pay for it, you serve for an x number of years after you graduate. If you leave before serving out you contract, you reimburse the department what you owe. LAPD, I think has such a contract with recruits. In some departments, there is no such agreements.

  3. This is one of those “depends” kind of questions.
In CA, most police academies are simply a community college course. Think of it as such.
Would you pay for any other course? Would you take out a loan to pay for the course & course materials (uniform, books, handcuffs, gun, duty leather, etc.) for any other course?
If you are on a department’s payroll, then they will most likely pay all the fees & provide the required materials. This may apply also if you are hired while in the academy. Affiliated cadets have advantages.
In Illinois, I am unsure but would suspect it is similar.

  4. Sweetie,

You are performing a service to the community. You will not have to pay a dime for training (as a matter of fact they will pay you)

Contact the Urbana Champaign police department (they probably have a website) and tell them you want to apply. They will tell you what paperwork you need and you can pick up a workbook (like they have for the SATs) at Barnes and Noble that will help you study.

    You’ll be fine! Good luck!

P.S. I found you the number that you need to call for more info. It’s 217-328-3313
