Can a man become sterile after a vasectomy if he never clears out the remaining sperm?

It is recommended that after a vasectomy the patient needs to clear out all remaining sperm by having 12 -20 ejaculations. My question is, if he never ejaculates, how long do the remaining sperm survive?
